2019 Nominee – Rick Porcello

Pitcher, Boston Red Sox

Early in May, the Red Sox visited Walter Reed Medical Center before our visit to the White House. During that visit Rick Porcello met privately with a group of injured soldiers and was really impacted by the visit.

When the team returned home Rick expressed interest in getting involved with the Home Base Program.  The Home Base Program was founded in 2009 in partnership with the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital. The program helps service members, veterans and their families heal from the invisible wounds: traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress and related conditions.

The week after the visit to the White House Rick toured the Home Base Clinic and met with soldiers participating in the program.

Every Wednesday home game, Rick provides tickets for a soldier, and guests, from Home Base and meets with them during batting practice. He also meets with the group during their other visits to Fenway Park.

Rick is extremely passionate about giving back to soldiers and veterans.
