2019 Nominee – Craig Stammen

Pitcher, San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres have selected relief pitcher Craig Stammen as their 2019 Bob Feller Act of Valor Nominee. Craig has proven to be a worthy nominee through his involvement and support of our military community nationwide.

During his time with the Washington Nationals, Craig participated in a tour sponsored by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in which a group of athletes traveled to Afghanistan to thank the troops deployed there. He saw firsthand the work and sacrifices that they and their families make.

From this experience, and upon his return, he partnered with the United Heroes League in the spirit of giving back to military families. Through this partnership, he personally provided the families with a fun night out at the ballpark, donating tickets and concession vouchers for a selected number of games.

During his first year with the San Diego padres in 2017, Craig brought this program to Petco Park. It was immediately a huge success! He and the Padres continue to provide military families with this unique opportunity. In addition to tickets to the game, the experience also includes an invitation to the field to watch batting practice, and a private meet and greet with Craig for groups of 20 people at a time. It is important to mention that he personally purchases the concessions and food vouchers for everyone in the group.

San Diego has the largest military community footprint that exists across our nation. During his time in San Diego, Craig has led our military outreach activities that include base visits, attending our Annual Alumni Softball games at local military installations, and numerous pregame ceremonies and activities. He has had the opportunity to interact first hand with service men and women and their families, and is clearly the #1 supporter of all our Padres Military Programs.
