2018 Nominee – Justin Turner

Justin Turner
Team: Los Angeles Dodgers

Position: Infielder

Since joining the Dodgers in 2014, Justin Turner has been a pillar of the team’s community efforts, giving his time, energy and financial support to a variety of charitable efforts, including our military service members throughout the greater Los Angeles area, which make him an exemplary candidate for the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award.

This spirit of service led to the creation of the Justin Turner Foundation in 2016, whose mission is to support homeless veterans and children facing life-altering illnesses. During the past two off-seasons, Turner has organized the now annual Justin Turner Golf Classic in his efforts to support the Veterans’ Home at the Dream Center, a local non-profit dedicated to serving underserved communities. Through his efforts, the Dream Center is able to house over 26 veterans, and is currently working to open a home for women veterans in 2018. Overseas, the Justin Turner Foundation is also working with the Yokota Air Base in Fussa, Japan to help create a softball league for U.S. military children.

Since 2014, Justin has been a major supporter of AM 570’s annual Veteran’s Day Radio-a-Thon, volunteering at the station and taking pledges from callers to benefit the Paralyzed Veterans of America. This past year, the event raised over $230,000, including Turner’s $20,000 donation.

In addition to his work off the field, during nearly every home game, Turner greets the Dodgers’ “Military Hero of the Game.” This recognition is especially powerful, since it occurs off-camera and evokes substantial emotion from the service member involved; making it one of the most touching aspects of each game. Justin’s goal is to appreciate each service member for the sacrifice they make for our country on a daily basis.

Turner is also active on multiple social media platforms, which has helped him connect with fans and discover worthy charitable causes. He enjoys creating unique experiences for special fans, including our current and former service members.

A native Angelino, Turner has furthered his ties to the community during his time with the Dodgers and used his platform to promote positive change in his hometown. While he continues to perform at the highest level year in and year out, it’s his work off the field that makes him a fan favorite in the military community. This impact will surely last well after the final out.
